Aku's Massive Movie Review Thread (AMMRT)

You all know that I'm a movie-freak. Oh well, I just thought that because of the reason that I watch a lot of movies, I could as well give some comments about them here and probably recommend them if they're good. So everytime I watch another movie, I'll post some comments about it here.

Of course anyone can review movies in this thread and give those recommendations! I don't mind if this is just me reviewing movies, but it would be mucho grande cooler if everyone could participate! So, everytime you see a movie, please let us know what did you think of it!

Just follow my example of posting the review here. Straight link to www.imdb.com to the movie's specific destination would be nice. You can also give a score, let's say 0 - 10, okie? Or would you prefer 0 - 5 stars?

Well I'll go first..

Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain (2001)
aka Amélie
Ok, just watched this yesterday as I had never seen it before and I had heard good things about it, plus its rating at IMDB is 8.6/10 at the moment.

Well, I still didn't expect so much about the movie, as it didn't interest me so much anyways. Well, the movie was amazing! It's a bit weird, but that makes it very original. It's so cute, adorable and a very happy movie. The original style of cinematography makes it funnier, also enjoyable. Audrey Tautou is perfect in the role of Amélie.

I could imagine when this movie was at the cinemas and when people left the cinema, neither one of them had a sad face. I could imagine everyone left the cinema with happy smiles on their faces. It's very difficult to even describe this movie, as it is just so original, yet a very, very good movie.

If you feel a bit sad and want to have a big smile on your face, then watch this movie as it is just so happy in its own way. I recommend this movie to everyone, though some may not like the weird style used in it.

"Simply a wave of positiviness, the happiest movie ever made"

Aku's rating: 4.5/5 stars

300
OMG IT ROXORZ! :D Don't know why, but it's probably because of the mythologic stuff in it. It's full of blood, pride and corruption. YEY!

Don't know how to review a movie, so....

9/10

I could as well review 300 now as I saw it at the cinema like a week ago.

300 (2006)
aka Frank Miller's 300

So I didn't expect so much about this movie. I saw the trailer yonks before it came to the cinemas and I must say that it didn't impress me so much. I just didn't like the idea of heavy metal -music playing in the background in a epic movie. But I had to see it as it had so good reviews.

Well, I went to see it and I must way I was impressed. At IMDB it has a rating of 8.0/10, but I wouldn't say it deserves such a good rating. Well, the movie is one of the most entertaining movies I've ever seen and the fight scenes are one of the best I've ever seen, but does that actually make it a good movie? No, it doesn't.

I hadn't seen so much slow motion effects since The Matrix which made it a bit cliché as well. Don't get me wrong, those effects are always cool but the fact that there were slow motion effects like every 2 seconds just made it more cliché like I mentioned before.

I've read about Thermophylai's fight and I've also made a writing of it and presented it at school. It was a bit dissapointing to see that the movie didn't follow the fact how the things really went and they just Hollywoodised so much of it. It really didn't went like you see it in the movie.

The role peformances were a bit irrelevant in the movie, as it was just an action movie - Though one of the best action movies I've ever seen. The plot was what it was, it was like everytime something else was shown after the fighting scenes I just had the feeling of rewinding them.

As an entertainment movie, it's perfect. But as a movie, it's not so great. I still recommend the movie to everyone out there, as it won't be dissapointing when you want to see blood and body parts falling around. I'd give this movie maximum of 6.5/10.

"Perfect as entertainment, lacking as a movie"

The Queen (2006)

Just finished watching this movie and I must say that it was pretty much what I expected it to be; Overrated in its wholeness because of Helen Mirren's astonishing role performance. So, the only reason which makes this movie watchable is Helen Mirren's work in it. You can definitely see how much she has put time and effort on building up the character and that I must say is amazing to watch. Without seeing all the other 4 movies which were nominated for the oscar of best performance by an actress in a leading role, I still can believe that Helen Mirren deserved the oscar, as the role performance that she does is just simply candy to your eyes and ears.

Although, the movie is after all rather dissapointing. There's a good use of old tapes of Princess Diana and other footage from the year 1997 and those are used very well in the movie. That still doesn't make the movie a recommendation in my mind. If you're looking after a movie with a great role performance, then this is a movie for that hunger. I'd still rather watch something else with mediocre role performances but which would be better as a movie. One person can't carry the whole movie on his/her shoulders to make the movie itself great, that's just a fact. If you're not interested in Princess Diana's death, the year 1997 and all that media fuzz, then this movie will most likely be unbearable for you, as it doesn't really deal with anything else than that and the grief of people and the queen's acts because of it.

I have to be rather judgemental on this, so here we go:

"Helen Mirren's astonishing role performance against a very dissapointing movie"

Aku's rating: 2/5 stars

Henri's rating: 3/5 stars

I found The Queen rather interesting, cos there's so much about the English Royal family I didn't know about before I saw the movie. Never really cared about them before to know that really...

Now I thought that I could always add someone else's rating to a movie which is already reviewed before, so now I'm going to add yours to 300 :)

300

- I'm a sucker for special effects and beautiful scenery. I loved how everything looked slightly surreal. I had watched the latest south park episode which had a parody of 300 in its story, which made the movie experience funny too. Even though it could have been even more epic n stuff, I agree with the 8/10 rating it has on imdb.

And then there's forrest gump, the shawshank redemption and the green mile, which are close to perfection. 9.5/10.

Another really good movie I just watched was "Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi". This is the best animated movie I have ever seen. The animation is beautiful, the story is interesting and the japanese voice actors are great. 9/10.

World Trade Center (2006)

Rented it this evening and just finished watching it. I must say that I didn't have any high expectations on this movie either. It doesn't even have such a high rating at IMDB, which is mostly the place that I trust when it comes to ratings and reviews. The movie turned out to be much better than I expected.

Well, first of all, it's a very emotional movie and I like emotional movies very much indeed. If a movie makes me cry, that usually lifts up the final rating I'm going to give. Yes, I did cry in this movie many times as well and I do that when movies are emotional. There's nothing wrong with that if you ask me. Oliver Stone is the director in this one and he still doesn't let you down when it comes to directing.

Nicholas Cage does a great work in his role of John McLoughlin and Michael Peña does his best role performance yet to date. Still, the role performances aren't so significant, nothing near academy award nominated, but they still are good and gives the movie that extra something.

The soundtrack simply blows you away, you can't go wrong with Craig Armstrong, now can you? The maintheme is just simply beautiful and the music is used very emotionally in just the right places. Still, the use of music and the style of the cinematography makes the movie a bit clichéish, but not too much. You can like cliché in certain levels, but if the "cliché-meter" goes over the bearable, then it just gets messy and boring. This movie has the right amount of that, so it doesn't cross the line.

The movie isn't perfect, but it is still indeed a great drama. I don't know if I'm rushing into this rating, but I'll just give it now before I change my mind.

"An emotional and a touching film experience, a surprisingly good movie"

Aku's Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Just did change my mind on the original 4 stars. I'd say it's more near the 4 stars than it does with 3 stars :)

I thought 300 was great. Loved the special effects like Kris although in places I thought it looked a bit too computerised. All the Greek history and stuff was pretty cool as well. I'd give it 8/10

World trade Center sucked imho. Seriously, why do we need to make movies about real tragedies? To honour the heroes that we lost, or to make easy money? Grrrrr.... 1/5! I watched 30mins of it, then turned it off.

Well that's too bad :( I thought it was much better than that :(

Btw, I'm not sure if I'd count your vote as you only watched 30 minutes of the movie. I did count it, but should I? I like to think that a person can't review a movie if he hasn't seen it all the way through.

United 93 (2006)

Ok, finally I'm commenting a movie I had expectations on. This movie has had great reviews and it has a rating of 7.9/10 at IMDB.

This movie was great. The acting from every actor/actress is superb, all their emotions are so realistic that the movie just simply feels real. You can really feel the emotions of the characters through the screen, the sadness and the feel of being in panic. The screenplay is fantastic, the plot evolves from this calm enviroment to a total chaos and does it almost perfectly.

The cinematography is free-hand in almost every part of the movie and it does fit very well. It gives that extra something to make the movie more realistic and feel of chaos all around. Despite all the complimenting, this movie has its faults, but it's really hard to describe were it goes wrong. Maybe it's the fact that it has too many things related to piloting and every possible real thing from air traffic control that it's just too much, so it gets a bit boring at parts. I don't mean boring like there isn't anything happening, I mean boring in the way the movie could have been much more simplified than it is. The movie itself just lacks something and it pisses me off that I don't know what. Despite all the information it has in it, it could have something more.

Although, this movie is pretty exciting from the beginning till the end, but it's just isn't that good as a movie. Don't get me wrong, it's great, but it isn't as good as you could think I would think it is because all of my complimenting in this stage. I warmly recommend this movie to everyone, as you won't be dissapointed. It gives different perspectives of different people and you can see how they all react in the same things, which is very well made by the way. Maybe this movie deserves 4 stars, but I'm still going to give it 3.5, which is still a very good rating. See this movie yourself and you may be surprised.

"An exciting film experience with a fantastic screenplay"

Aku's rating: 3.5/5 stars

Yeah well it is actually better, though I gave them both the same rating. It's just that they're still so different from each other so it's really hard to compare those two movies together.

Oldboy (2003)

This movie is one of the most disturbing movies I've seen in a while and it's an amazing film experience as well. It's a South Korean film and if you haven't seen it, I warmly suggest that you do.

It's really hard to review anything from this movie, as I don't want give you any spoilers. This movie is just intelligent; I don't know if I'm rushing into this next opinion, but it may be that this movie is the most intelligent movie I've seen since The Matrix. I don't remember all the movies I've seen after The Matrix, so I may be rushing into this.

The role performance by the lead actor, Min-sik Choi, is just superb. In one word; Excellent. The pain he suffers inside is seen from the screen like he would really suffer and one of the last scenes (again, won't give you any spoilers) is one of the best scenes I've seen in a movie in a while, brilliant acting from both Min-Sik and another actor Ji-tae Yu.

Like I said in the beginning, this movie is very, very disturbing and I won't be recommending this to the weak-minded. It catches your attention right from the beginning and really makes you draw your own conclusions about the things happening in the movie and it's just exciting. The movie has a couple of fighting scenes too, but it's still not an action movie, though the fighting scenes are brilliant as well. What I can read from IMDB, its age limit in Norway is for example 18 years, so it does get a bit violent at parts.

"A very disturbing, yet an intelligent and a strong movie"

Aku's rating: 4/5 stars

I just figured out that I haven't told anything about the plot in the movies I've reviewed this far, but that doesn't really matter, as you can always just click the title and read the plot from IMDB. Problem solved :)

Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom (2003)
aka Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring

Just finished watching this movie and it is just an absolutely beautiful film in every aspect. This movie follows the old saying 'A picture tells more than a thousand words' (or however it's said). What I mean is that there aren't many words spoken in this film, you can just see the beauty of the cinematography, how the director has captured the stunning images and landscapes throughout the film.

The movie is very simple, but it's that Asian simplicity which makes it so astonishing. I guess some might think that this movie is boring, but in my opinion it isn't. The story is told very well with almost only images and these silent parts where you can see the different actions and reactions of the characters. I've never seen anything like this on the screen, because actually you don't even think about the silence when you're watching the movie, it's just so intelligent.

Throughout the movie you can see different things changing every season and when the years pass by and the amazing part is that it isn't told with any kind of dialogue or narration, it's just there for you to notice and for you to think the things yourself. It needs you to concentrate, which also makes the movie very interesting. I could imagine the screenplay to be very, very short, although the movie lasts for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Originality, that's one word among others which pop into your head when you're watching the movie. The movie is also very instructive and makes you think of your own life, what have you done right and what have you done wrong. Peacuful, calm, almost perfection. I recommend this movie to everyone, but I'd suggest you watch it when you have the time for it, without any pauses, by watching it straight through. Despite from all of this admiring and complimenting, I'm not going to give it 5 stars, though some may say it deserves it. It's hard to explain, as there isn't actually anything wrong in the movie; It's just a very good movie.

"Beautiful simplicity followed by a peacuful heart-warming story"

Aku's rating: 4/5 stars

I almost watched an entire episode of Gilmore Girls once, so I know the meaning of the word disturbed.
